Sequential Monte Carlo for Model Predictive Control
This paper proposes the use of Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) as the computational engine for general (non-convex) stochastic Model Predictive Control (MPC) problems. It shows how SMC methods can be used to find global optimisers of non-convex problems, in particular for solving open-loop stochastic control problems that arise at the core of the usual receding-horizon implementation of MPC. This ...
متن کاملMinimum variance importance sampling via Population Monte Carlo
Variance reduction has always been a central issue in Monte Carlo experiments. Population Monte Carlo can be used to this effect, in that a mixture of importance functions, called a D-kernel, can be iteratively optimised to achieve the minimum asymptotic variance for a function of interest among all possible mixtures. The implementation of this iterative scheme is illustrated for the computatio...
متن کاملModified Monte Carlo with Importance Sampling Method
Monte Carlo simulation methods apply a random sampling and modifications can be made of this method is by using variance reduction techniques (VRT). VRT objective is to reduce the variance due to Monte Carlo methods become more accurate with a variance approaching zero and the number of samples approaches infinity, which is not practical in the real situation (Chen, 2004). These techniques are ...
متن کاملVariance-Gamma and Monte Carlo
The Variance-Gamma (VG) process was introduced by Dilip B. Madan and Eugene Seneta as a model for asset returns in a paper that appeared in 1990, and subsequently used for option pricing in a 1991 paper by Dilip and Frank Milne. This paper serves as a tutorial overview of VG and Monte Carlo, including three methods for sequential simulation of the process, two bridge sampling methods, variance ...
متن کاملThe Bias-Variance Dilemma of the Monte Carlo Method
We investigate the setting in which Monte Carlo methods are used and draw a parallel to the formal setting of statistical inference. In particular, we nd that Monte Carlo approximation gives rise to a bias-variance dilemma. We show that it is possible to construct a biased approximation schemes with a lower approximation error than a related unbiased algorithms.
